How much does pet insurance cost?
The industry's own association, NAPHIA, puts the average accident & illness premium at $749.29 a year ($62.44/mo) for dogs and $386.47 a year ($32.21/mo) for cats in its 2025 State of the Industry Report (2024 data). Accident-only policies average $193.29 (dogs) and $110.03 (cats). NAPHIA's 2026 highlights (2025 data) move accident & illness to $836/yr for dogs and $435/yr for cats — premiums are rising, and the two vintages are printed separately here rather than blended.

Why the averages disagree
They measure different things. NAPHIA averages premiums actually paid across all policyholders — including older pets, whose premiums run far higher (Insurify's life-stage medians: a senior dog at $116/mo against a young dog at $40/mo). Insurify's figures are medians of new quotes, which skew younger and cheaper. Both are printed with their measure named; neither is "the price of pet insurance," and your quote will turn on species, breed, age, location, deductible, and reimbursement level. This site publishes premium data only — it does not recommend any insurer or policy, and it sells nothing.
