How much does a dog cost per year — and over a lifetime?

Two published frames. The ASPCA's cost chart puts a dog's annual budget at $1,391, of which routine medical care is $225. Synchrony Bank's 2025 Lifetime of Care study puts the 15-year lifetime cost of a dog at $22,125–$60,602 — and finds nearly 8 in 10 owners underestimate what a pet will cost.

Annual costs (ASPCA chart, 2021 update)

Annual itemDog
Food$300
Routine medical costs (vaccines, wellness visits, etc.)$225
Preventative medication (heartworm, flea/tick)$185
Litter—
Toys$37
Treats$60
Health insurance$516
License$15
Grooming supplies$28
Total$1,391

The insurance line in the ASPCA chart ($516) is the chart's own 2021 figure; current published premium averages are higher — see the pet insurance guide for NAPHIA's 2025/2026 numbers. The ASPCA also lists special costs outside the annual total: professional grooming $300 (dogs), dental $500 for a dog / $300 for a cat, and boarding at $25/day.

Initial / one-time costs (ASPCA chart)

Initial itemDog
Spay / neuter$300
Initial medical costs (vaccines, etc.)$300
Collar / leash / harness$60
Microchipping$20
Litter box—
Scratching post—
Carrier$50
Crate$60
Training assets (class, at-home materials)$200
Grooming tools$40
Total$1,030

Annual plus initial is the ASPCA's published first-year total: $3,221 for a dog — broken down on the first-year page. Set the annual budget next to Synchrony's study, whose annual dog spend runs $1,591–$2,770 on its care model: the two sources budget differently (the ASPCA chart is a lean essentials budget; Synchrony models fuller care including wellness plans), and both are printed as published rather than reconciled into a single number.
